Domestic Violence

Domestic violence occurs between people who are in a “domestic relationship”, where the actions or behavior of one person is harmful or endangers the health, safety or well-being of the other, and can include:

Physical, Sexual and Mental Abuse

The Family Protection Act defines a “domestic relationship” as existing between:

(a)    married couples (current or former);
(b)    couples who live or have lived together in a relationship in the nature of marriage;
(c)    parents of a child or persons who have parental responsibility for a child;
(d)    family members and relatives living in the same household;
(e)    couples in an engagement, courtship, or in an intimate or sexual relationship (actual or perceived);
(f)     people sharing or recently sharing the same residence;
(g)    one person is wholly or partially dependent upon on-going care of another person residing in the same household;
(h)    one person is a housekeeper in the same household.
