Palace and Cabinet records
In 1975, official records first mentioned that the Minister of Police in 1868 was Kupu a Vanua Veikune, who was chosen by King George I while he was still a senior student at Tupou College.

Early days
Between 1868 and 1875, Tonga Police was quite active in keeping the King informed on the state of peace in the Kingdom. It was also during this time that Tonga Police was sent to Vava’u to settle disturbances.

History of Police Law
The first Police Act was passed in 1891. It was updated in 1903 and replaced in 1923. A new Act was re written in 1968 to coincide with the assistance from UK. The Act was replaced by the Tonga Police Act 2010. It was proclaimed by Privy Council on 19th of November 2010 [PC Decision 249] and the Act commenced on 02 February, 2011.

1875
The Minister of Police was Tu’uhetoka. He was the Minister when King George I signed the Constitution. It is not clear when he took over from Kupu a Vanua Veikune. Tu’uhetoka is the great great grandfather of one of the present day nobles, Lasike.
